A vision becomes reality

Christian Dittrich, a civil engineer and technology enthusiast, had long dreamed of a home near the sea, where he and his son Elliot could live and enjoy surfing and nature. In the summer of 2017, he started his project on a plot of land by the Löderup beach, a place with spectacular views and close proximity to Dag Hammarskjöld’s Backåkra.
With a budget of SEK 6 million and sketches he drew himself, Christian enlisted the help of his friend and architect Karin Santhesson to refine his vision. The result was a 140-square-meter cottage, designed for both practical family life and a passion for cooking and surfing.

Building near the sea - opportunities and challenges

Löderup beach is known for its beach erosion – 200 meters of beach have disappeared since the 1960s. Insurance companies are often restrictive about covering houses close to the water, and building permits are not given for houses below 2.8 meters above sea level. However, Christian’s plot, located 12 meters above sea level, met the requirements.

But there were challenges. The sand hill behind the house began to collapse during construction, requiring stabilization with L-braces and coir fabric. The municipality also contributed by moving sand to secure the area. This is an example of how climate adaptation is crucial when building houses in coastal environments.

Smart building and budget solutions

Christian took an active role in the construction project, from design to practical solutions. The house was built from lightweight concrete blocks with underfloor heating embedded in the concrete slab – a sustainable and energy-efficient choice.

When it came to the kitchen, he refused to let the budget get out of hand. After receiving quotes of up to SEK 1.5 million, he decided to build the kitchen himself with his father. The result was a stylish, black kitchen with Portuguese limestone worktops, at a cost of just SEK 100 000-150 000.

A finished dream house

The house was completed in the fall of 2018, and Christian and Elliot had already moved in. The two buildings, one of which has a roof terrace, have a stylish design where natural materials blend into the surroundings.

Inside, the home has a modern and minimalist feel. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, where Christian cooks crepes for Elliot on weekends. Elliot’s room has its own terrace exit, and the buried trampoline outside is a favorite spot.

Although Gert Wingårdh had a slight objection to the glass railing on the roof terrace, both he and Anne Lundberg were impressed by the house. For Christian, it was proof that all his choices and efforts were worth it.
