What would it be like to live in a greenhouse with a stone house inside? For Johan and Bettan in Skurup, this became a reality and a tribute to their shared passion for farming. In Husdrömmars’ revisit, we got a glimpse of what life looks like for them two years after moving in. A home where nature literally grows around the corner and where architecture meets function in a unique way.

Unique design and function of the greenhouse
The greenhouse in Skurup is no ordinary greenhouse. At an impressive 420 square meters and 900 panes of glass, it encloses a stone house that is both modern and functional. The total construction cost was SEK 7 million, but the result is as much a work of art as a home.
To address the unique challenges of living in a greenhouse, the couple has implemented creative solutions for temperature regulation, such as cross drafts through the house and automated motors that open the skylights when needed. Despite summer heatwaves, the house has proven to be both habitable and comfortable.

The crops: figs and future plans
One of the most fascinating parts of Johan and Bettan’s lifestyle is their crops. The greenhouse is divided into two sections, each of which the couple is responsible for.
- Bettan’s section: figs, pomegranates, licorice root and even pineapples thrive here. Bettan’s section is a well-ordered oasis that shows what is possible with the right commitment and knowledge.
- Johan’s part: Still in the development stage, but the plans are ambitious. Johan dreams of creating a fish pond with carp, a wooden deck and a hot tub. His vision is complementary to Bettan’s structured crops and will add a creative touch to the greenhouse.
Life in a greenhouse: temperature, challenges and harmony
Living in a greenhouse brings both benefits and challenges. In summer, the temperature can rise to 40 degrees on the roof, while the rest of the greenhouse stays between 32 and 35 degrees. In the evening, the heat is lowered through effective ventilation.
With 900 panes of glass, window cleaning can be a nightmare, but the couple sees it as a simple routine. They wash the windows once a year in the areas where they spend time, while the roof goes without cleaning.
Despite the practical challenges, Johan and Bettan enjoy their life in the greenhouse. Even the noise caused by the skylight motors when the wind blows has become part of their everyday life.
A stylish interior that matches the architecture
The interior of the stone house is as impressive as its exterior. With an austere, minimalist style, the couple has managed to create a balance between modernity and tranquility.
In the kitchen and dining room, the décor is spare but functional, and the bathroom follows the same aesthetic line. In the atrium of the house stands a solitary olive tree, which according to Gert Wingårdh creates such a harmonious feeling that it would be a perfect place for a wedding.

Future plans and inspiration for dreamers
The future of the greenhouse is full of exciting possibilities. Johan plans to complete his part of the greenhouse with a hot tub, fish pond and additional vegetation. Once this is complete, the whole will truly reflect the couple’s shared vision.
Johan and Bettan’s projects inspire on many levels – both in terms of creative architecture and the possibilities of living close to nature. For those who dream of living differently, their home is a reminder that the boundaries of what a house can be are limited only by the imagination.
