A Unique Project in Huddinge – Grand Designs Sweden

In episode 3, Huddinge – Grand Designs Sweden, we follow 26-year-old carpenter Rasmus Larsson and his extraordinary journey from dream to reality. With a vision to create a unique, ecological home that blends into the coniferous forests of Sörmland, he takes us on a project characterized by passion, craftsmanship and determination. Rasmus, who was still living with his parents when the project began, decided to build his first home – a narrow and elegant wooden house designed by legendary designer Jonas Bohlin.

The vision behind the project

Rasmus Larsson’s dream of owning his own home was far from the usual first home. Inspired by the stillness and power of nature, he wanted to build a home that not only respected its surroundings but also became part of it. His plot of land in Huddinge, in the middle of the hilly terrain, became the place where this dream took shape.

With the help of Jonas Bohlin and Hans Murman, a design concept was created that exudes both simplicity and sophisticated precision. The slender house is shaped like a long, straight spear that seems to float among the trees, a powerful contrast to the wildness of the forest.

The unique construction of the house

The house, which is 21 meters long and 5 meters wide, stands on steel columns to minimize the impact on nature. The load-bearing frame is built with glulam beams and wall blocks of Isotimber – a Swedish invention in which air pockets in the wood act as natural insulation. The façade is clad in spruce panels treated with tar vitriol, which gives a beautiful grayish tone that blends in perfectly with the forest.

On the ground floor there are guest rooms, a laundry room, a bathroom and a combined kitchen and living room, where the ceiling height reaches an impressive seven meters. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a walk-in closet. Throughout, the house is a tribute to the natural beauty of wood.

The challenges of construction

Building a home in harmony with nature has its challenges. To avoid cutting down trees on the site, Rasmus chose to lift the heavy wall blocks into place by helicopter – a spectacular solution that cost SEK 120,000. Working alone in his spare time also meant that the schedule was pushed back. Rasmus’s attention to detail, such as nailing the façade panel with over 9,000 hand-driven nails, contributed to the delay but also ensured exceptional quality.

A celebration of craftsmanship

What makes Rasmus’ projects particularly inspiring is his passion for the craft. As a carpenter, he wanted every detail to reflect his craftsmanship. From the milled electrical outlets to the wedge-sawn plank floor, everything is thoughtful and carefully executed. In spite of setbacks and long days, he continued with his vision, a reminder that real quality requires time and commitment.

The end result and the future

Although the house was not quite finished at the time of the last visit in the program, it stands as a monument to Rasmus’ dedication and Jonas Bohlin’s brilliant design. The graying wood and rust-red details of the corten steel blend harmoniously into the color scheme of the forest. The house is more than a home – it is a story of creativity, perseverance and love of craftsmanship.

Rasmus plans to move in next year and continue fine-tuning his dream project. The house is a perfect example of how modern and ecological building solutions can coexist with a strong tradition of Swedish craftsmanship.
