Rebuilding a childhood home is a project filled with emotion, nostalgia and dreams. For Henrik and Maria Silver in the Saltsjöbaden – House Dreams episode, it was more than just a renovation – it was an opportunity to create their dream home, while honoring the history behind the house. With the help of Henrik’s childhood friend and architect Måns Tham, a 1960s villa was transformed into a modern functionalist dream that not only impressed Gert Wingårdh, but also told a story of courage, passion and architectural brilliance.

From childhood home to architectural masterpiece
Henrik and Maria bought the house from Henrik’s father to realize their dream of a modern home in Saltsjöbaden. The house, a 1960s terraced house, has long stood high up on the hill overlooking Baggenfjärden. The project faced challenges early on, not least because of Saltsjöbaden’s heritage status, where building permits often involve a long and demanding process.
Despite this, Henrik and Maria, together with Måns Tham, managed to convince the city planning office that their vision not only respected the history of the area, but also added something new and valuable.

The construction process: Challenges and triumphs
The build was fraught with challenges: mis-packaged windows that required hand power to carry up steep stairs, cold weather that made plastering difficult, and a construction budget that exceeded the original ceiling by a million kronor. Despite this, Henrik and Maria fought on with passion and determination.
One of the most distinctive moments of the project was the installation of the spectacular, undulating window section that opens the house to the garden and blurs the line between inside and outside.

Design and architecture: A tribute to the funk style
Architect Måns Tham drew inspiration from modernist architect Alvar Aalto to create a home that exudes functionality, light and flow. By using diagonal sightlines and open spaces, he created a home that feels much larger than its 160 square meters.
- Open floor plan: Kitchen and living room are united in an area that invites to socialize and socialize.
- Blue ceiling: A bold and aesthetic choice that evokes the sky and sea outside.
- Sedum roofs: In addition to aesthetic benefits, sedum roofs also have practical functions such as insulation and effective drainage.
