A False Red Twist and Inspiring Revisits – House Dreams

The season premiere of House Dreams delivered, as usual, great inspiration and poignant stories of unique building projects. The program offered both exciting new visions and revisits that showed how life goes on in some of our most beloved house dreams. This time, we followed Gert and Karin Wingårdh to their personal house project in Bohuslän, and made stops at families whose dreams we have followed before.

Gert and Karin Wingårdh build Äggdal - Falun red with a twist

It’s not often we get to follow an architect’s dream house, but in this episode we get an insight into Gert and Karin Wingårdh’s personal project in Bohuslän. The couple have chosen to demolish an old farmhouse and rebuild it, in a way that both pays tribute to the old and invites new thinking.

A croft and a barn with unexpected details

With its porch and sparse interior, the red croft is a tribute to the classic Swedish idiom. At the same time, details such as the mountain-paneled gable of the barn, with its bird and hop lofts, add a modern and playful twist. The result is a balance between tradition and innovation that is hard to resist.

– We wanted to create something that fit into the nature reserve but still felt like our own,” says Karin Wingårdh.

Family future and practical visions

This is more than just an aesthetic dream. The farm is meant to accommodate the whole family – children, grandchildren and future generations. Karin and Gert have also prepared for their own needs as they grow older. The barn is designed to serve as an accessible home for themselves, an example of long-term and sustainable planning.

The red kitchen and living room create warmth and togetherness on the ground floor. Upstairs, the furnishings are more ascetic, in white, as a calm contrast. The large veranda, furnished with beds that work both day and night, becomes the heart of the house during the warm summer evenings.

Thoughtful material choices

With second-hand bricks on the barn roof and fake red mountain paneling on the croft, it is clear that the Wingårdhs have paid great attention to the choice of materials. The brick is not only beautiful but also gives a sense of history and patina – even though everything under the surface is new and modern.

Gert and Karin show us that big dreams don’t always have to be quick projects. They have had neither a timetable nor a budget, but still let passion and creativity lead the way.

The school in Ramsåsa gets new life

The next return visit takes us to Kajsa and Hampus in Ramsåsa, who bought an old school a few years ago. Here we see a harmonious balance between preserved details and modern function.

With their kitchen and living room hailed as some of the best in the program’s history, Kajsa and Hampus continue to refine their home. The plastic windows have been left in place while they carefully test new windows to ensure the house retains its character.

Here’s some inspiration for those who want to renovate carefully and let time shape the best decisions.

A new phase in the Grönekulle estate

Linn and Tora have shown us how an old house can be transformed with love and care. Since we last visited, their family has grown – and so has their home.

They have chosen to decorate with carefully selected items from flea markets and auctions, giving the home a soul and history. With a new wooden deck and a thoughtful four-meter desk in front of the view, they continue to create a space that reflects their personality and needs.

Closure

Gert and Karin Wingårdh’s project in Bohuslän is a reminder that house dreams are about more than just buildings – they are a place for generations, for creativity and for life itself. By combining traditional materials with modern design, they show how to create something timeless and sustainable.

The return visits to Ramsåsa and Grönekulle in turn inspire us to take our time, let the soul of the house emerge and think long-term.

If you’re just starting out on your own dream home, House Dreams Season 7 offers a treasure trove of ideas and lessons. Get inspired, and create a place that is your dream.
