A house in harmony, Vikingshill – Grand Designs Sweden

In the Stockholm archipelago, a story of bold architecture, family bonding and relentless ambition unfolds. In the premiere episode, Vikingshill – Grand Designs Sweden 2024, we follow Ylva Höglund and Michel Carinci on their two and a half year journey to realize a home for their bonus family. A house that, despite its size and complexity, would blend into the rolling natural landscape. But there were obstacles along the way, from budget problems and construction errors to changes in the plans. The result? An inspiring villa that tells a story of dreams, compromises and a big dose of determination.

When Ylva and Michel met, they both already had separate lives with children from previous relationships – Ylva with two and Michel with three. Although they had only been together for a year when the project started, they quickly decided to build a joint home for their large family. The plot in Vikingshill, with its dramatic slope and views of the Stockholm inlet, became the starting point for their ambitious build.

A dream in the archipelago: the architects' vision

Ylva and Michel hired Jordens Arkitekter with a clear desire – a home that could unite their family without dominating the natural landscape. The architects opted to work with two staggered bodies of houses that gave the house a low-key and discreet expression despite its 400 square meters. On the north side, panoramic windows face the expansive view, while the cedar paneling and black tar paper help the house blend into the surrounding terrain.

Inside the house, there are generous living spaces, private areas for adults and children, and functional areas such as a spa and computer games room. The vision was to create a balance – between community and privacy, between nature and architecture.

Challenges and critical decisions

Construction errors and budget problems

Despite the well-planned start, the project was beset by unexpected problems. Blasting work destroyed parts of the site and the foundations of the house turned out to be incorrectly poured, leading to expensive and time-consuming repairs. To complete the construction, Ylva had to sell her previous house in Åre, an emotional sacrifice for the family.

Changes during the construction process

During the project, Ylva and Michel chose to change several details in the architects’ drawings, including adding extra skylights. The changes improved light penetration but also challenged the architects’ vision of a more dark, mysterious experience of the house.

The end result: A home that unites the family

In May 2024, Ylva and Michel finally moved into their new home. Despite delays and a doubled budget, the end result was nothing short of spectacular. The large house is perceived as part of the landscape, with the cedar paneling and slate facade blending with the colors of nature.

Inside, the house is a harmonious combination of open spaces and private rooms, where the large family can gather or retreat when needed. The house has a clear focal point – the fireplace – which serves as both a source of heat and a gathering place.
