Top tips and inspiration for coloring kitchen doors

Choosing a kitchen color is a challenge. There are a lot of things to get right, including the color of cabinets and kitchen doors, walls, floors and furnishings, which must feel welcoming and harmonious and be thoroughly processed to work as a whole. How should you think and what do you start with? This is where we want to help with the best tips from us at Stiligts Färgskola.

How to start

Start by thinking about the layout of the kitchen, is it big or small? Dark or light? What kind of kitchen do you dream of in combination with the conditions available? A small kitchen “shrinks” with darker color choices, while lighter colors make the kitchen more airy. A large kitchen will be more rustic and have more character with darker colors. Also keep in mind that colors grow with the surface, which means that they become more colorful over a larger surface than over a smaller one. A good tip in choosing a kitchen color is to think about the other rooms in the home and find out the so-called “red thread” that permeates your home, and which should match and harmonize the style into a unit. If the rest of your home is painted in a cold tone, you may choose to follow the same tone instead of setting to a warm tone in the choice of kitchen color. Or if the home has variegated, colorful wallpaper that adjoins the kitchen, you pick one of the colors in the wallpaper to paint the kitchen with. A kitchen usually looks best if you keep the tones together, although wall paint and paint for kitchen doors do not have to be of the same color. You can get a sober, powdery surface on the wall by using, for example, gloss level 7, which gives a silky matte surface. Glossier kitchen doors harmonize with this to create a lovely finish. However, a general rule is to either stick to a cold or warm color that matches the rest of the decor in the home. Shades of blue/green are cold, shades of red/yellow are warm as a rule. Rooms in northern locations usually have a cold light, which means that cold shades are amplified and perceived as more blue or purple. Test paint with a few color samples, no more than 5, so as not to complicate it too much, to see how the color mixes with the light both from windows but also lamps during the different hours of the day, as they affect the color very much.

What style is your kitchen affects the color choice

What style is your kitchen? There are a variety of styles that fit in slightly different colors as suggestions… But there are no given rules that fit all. However, here are some rules of thumb when it comes to kitchen style and which kitchen colors are best suited, but as I said, the freedom to choose which kitchen color you like is
up to each individual! And there is really no one who can say what is right or wrong…. and there are always opportunities to repaint in a new kitchen color if it feels wrong. Here are some popular kitchen styles with suggestions on which kitchen color can match the style best.

Scandinavian minimalist kitchen that is more stripped down and where the feeling is more like a stylish office and which is adapted to the rest of the home’s architecture.

The sixties kitchen is also a popular choice and goes well with the warmer tones that were in vogue then.

Characterized by the straight frames around the cabinets and the symmetrical design of the
kitchen, the Shaker kitchen is synonymous with duller natural colours.

Gray kitchen cabinets are the most popular color right now on the kitchen front for Swedes who are renovating or building a new kitchen. It’s a classic neutral color that suits most styles such as both industrial but also retro style. But also pure beige color, is back on the wallpaper and the new color Greige which is beige and gray tone together, which gives a warmer feeling. The color provides a softer bridge of earthy tones that expresses calm and soothing harmony, than white and gray, which has been the most common kitchen color for several years and which provides sharper contrast and makes the kitchen colder in tone.

There are also a number of beige/grey colors that appear almost white, if you prefer the lighter colors, but a small splash of black, or a little red, has been added to give the kitchen a feeling of warmth in a calm way. The calm colors tie together different styles and expressions into a more unified harmony if you like to mix old and new, and which is just right in time, when you make use of what you already own or buy used at flea markets.

Stiligts color school part 1

Choosing a color is one of the hardest things about interior design. There are so many parameters to take into account. Picking out a color in daylight is something we generally feel pretty confident about. Daylight does most justice to all colors, it has plenty of light energy and thus fulfills the entire spectrum.
