From idea to reality

Johan and Nika Sahlin, living in an apartment in Kista, dreamed of something more than a standard house. Their vision was a unique, five-storey terraced house, adapted to the surrounding nature. By combining protruding volumes and overhangs, they created a home that not only blends into the landscape, but also reflects their personal style and values. A strong drive to build an environmentally friendly house led them to choose innovative materials such as cellular glass instead of traditional concrete – a decision that demonstrates their commitment to sustainability.

Architectural challenges and innovative solutions

The complex multi-level and cantilevered design of the building posed major technical challenges. It was not only a question of design, but also of how the house could be built practically. The choice of cellular glass as the basic material was both an environmentally friendly and technically challenging decision. This material minimizes heat loss and has a low climate impact, but required careful planning and precision during construction.

Another innovative solution was to place the sauna at the top of the house to maximize the view, reflecting the family’s desire to create a home where every detail contributes to the quality of life. The open floor plan with large windows and roof terrace reinforces the connection between the indoor and outdoor environment, giving a feeling of living in the middle of nature.

The construction process

Despite careful preparation, the construction process was fraught with difficulties. Delays in the construction drawings and problems with deliveries delayed the work. The family had to deal with budget overruns and unexpected challenges, eventually opting to project manage the construction themselves and hire tradesmen when needed.

Their decision to take control of the building themselves shows impressive determination. Despite setbacks such as water leaks and damp problems, they soldiered on. Nika, who has a background in construction, used her knowledge to structure and plan the project, while Johan got involved on the ground. Their combined strength and will to realize their vision was crucial in bringing the project to completion.
